This was a program initiated by the leaders of a Head Start program as way to engage their three and four year olds in authentic work as they learned about their culture and engaged their community. They invited local elders to come into the program along with other parents. The elders taught everyone about cultural aspects of their community. Young and old came together to sew costumes, plan menus, cook, learn new dances, drum and sing, and celebrate their learning each month with a school community powwow. The confidence of all participants grew through these public demonstrations of learning. |
